Centuries: 100 Stories in 100 Words.

This was a fun collaboration with writer Tom McGuire. We each wrote 50 stories that were each 100 words long. Additionally, I created 100 quick sketches to illustrate each micro-fiction tale.

Like extended Japanese poems, these stories are quirky, funny, dark, and insightful.

Sacred Places

This is a limited-edition book project done in collaboration with Bay Area bookmaker and printmaker Anja Borgstrom in 1996. I created the artworks for the book along with the poetry. Book design and hand construction was done by Anja. Individual prints and cards were made available through an art fair at Piedmont Yoga Studio in Oakland, CA.

From the book, a custom print of “Pledge” was delivered to environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill while she lived in a redwood tree in Northern California for 738 days in protest of forest clearcutting. Here are a few of the color drawings with excerpts from the text featured in the book:

PLEDGE

I pledge allegiance to the tree and the united roots of the redwood, And to the ecology for which it stands, One nature under the sky Interconnected, With Life Liberty Joy and Justice for all.

IN THE PINK

Was I dreaming of a place so far away, With hidden treasures and streets paved in gold, And liquid sky over rolling hills that held secrets and charms from the distant gazer in my mind’s eyes. I am there. Serenely green. So copacetic in turquoise. In the pink.
